The small tool kit that makes plug jobs easier
For an accessible four-cylinder engine, spark plugs are often less intimidating than people expect. The right tools matter more than a giant mechanics chest.
- Correct spark-plug socket
- 3/8-inch ratchet
- Long extension
- Flex-head ratchet or universal/flex solution when access demands it
- Torque wrench if required by the service procedure
- Gap checker only when applicable to the plug/manufacturer instructions
- Small amount of dielectric grease for appropriate boot/electrical use — not NGK plug threads
Scion tC: a straightforward example
Our Scion tC 2.5L four-cylinder is the kind of layout that makes DIY spark-plug service appealing. The plugs are in a single accessible bank, and a long extension lets the ratchet stay above the plug wells.
Honda Odyssey: access changes the job
We have also changed plugs on a Honda Odyssey. The rear side of the transverse V6 requires much more maneuvering than the Scion. A flex-head ratchet and a sensible stack of extensions make it easier to reach the rear bank without fighting the tool angle.
The extension we are adding
We plan to add the GEARWRENCH 81244 12-inch 3/8-inch drive extension because it fills a real gap in our current tool set. It would help with both spark-plug access and brake work.

NGK advises installing its spark plugs without anti-seize or lubricant on the threads. Lubricating the threads can change the effective torque. We use dielectric grease only where appropriate around the plug boot/electrical connection, following the product and vehicle guidance.
What we actually used on a 2012 Scion tC
Our latest plug job made the tool list much more concrete. We used the GEARWRENCH 185-piece set, a spark-plug socket, the separately purchased 12-inch GEARWRENCH 3/8-inch extension and a CTA Tools 3235 gap checker. The long extension was the standout because it kept the ratchet comfortably above the plug wells.

This is the exact kind of access that made us wish the mechanics set included a longer extension from the start.
We used anti-seize on the plug threads out of habit. NGK's current guidance says its plated plugs should be installed dry, so we would skip the anti-seize next time and follow NGK/factory torque guidance.
