What we actually bring to a DIY brake job

A mechanics set is only the center of the job. The things that save time are often the less glamorous pieces: a long extension, penetrating oil, a backup wrench, brake lubricant, cleaner, cardboard and a way to deal with a rotor screw that refuses to move.

Floor jack and jack stands

Our experience

We have used the Jack Boss 3-ton aluminum floor jack and Arcan low-profile jacks. Both have worked well for us, but we prefer the feel and low-profile access of the Arcan jacks.

Use the vehicle manufacturer's lifting and support points and appropriately rated stands. A hydraulic floor jack is for lifting; it should not be the sole support while you work around or underneath a raised vehicle.

Recent real-world use: 2005 Accord front pads

Our experience

We recently used this same core kit for a pad-only front brake service on both sides of a 2005 Honda Accord EX V6 sedan. The job took about 45–60 minutes. The Jack Boss floor jack and 3-ton stands worked as expected, the OEMTOOLS 27111 caliper tool was easy to use, and the GEARWRENCH mechanics set handled the fasteners without drama.

We cleaned and lubricated all four front caliper slide pins with SIL-Glyde, used CRC BRAKLEEN for cleanup and kept paper towels and cardboard under the work area. The Akebono ACT787A front pads cost about $55.

Rotor screws can turn a simple job into a fight

Our experience

Our Honda rotors used two retaining screws each. We sprayed them with PB Blaster and tried the Pittsburgh 6-bit manual impact screwdriver from Harbor Freight. It removed one, but two bits broke in half and the remaining screw stayed put. A screw extractor ultimately got the stubborn screw out.

Clean the slide pins and use the right lubricant

We have used AGS SIL-Glyde for years and like how long a small container lasts. On jobs where the service procedure calls for lubricating caliper slide pins, clean the pins and use a lubricant compatible with brake components and rubber parts. Follow the vehicle and brake-component manufacturer's service instructions rather than assuming every surface gets grease.

The cheap stuff matters too

Keep shop rags, paper towels and a flattened piece of cardboard nearby. Cardboard protects the garage floor from grime and gives your knees a cleaner surface when you are working low around the hub. Eye protection and mechanic gloves are inexpensive compared with the mess and debris involved in brake work.
