Our small-business coverage is informed by helping operate Olive Plus Sage, a handmade skincare brand that has sold on Etsy since 2019 and through its own WooCommerce store since 2024. We built and manage the website, ecommerce systems, product listings, shipping workflow and related tools. Product claims and current platform details are checked against official documentation.
The practical stack
A new seller does not need every premium tool. The minimum viable setup is a product people want, a place to sell it, a way to take clear photos, accurate shipping and a system for tracking money.
1. Choose where to sell
Etsy: faster exposure and easier maintenance.
WooCommerce: greater control, more setup and a long-term brand asset.
Our preferred path is Etsy first, then WooCommerce soon after—not waiting until marketplace problems force the move.
2. Domain, hosting and website tools
- Domain registrar: Namecheap has worked well for us since 2019.
- Hosting: EasyWP is a convenient managed WordPress option for smaller sites.
- Store: WooCommerce core is free, while extensions and design tools add cost.
- Design: Elementor Pro is powerful but should be purchased only when its widgets are needed.
- Email: use a branded address rather than only a free inbox.
3. Product photography
We use a Glendan 12×12 light box with phones and a Canon 80D. It creates a clean white background for small skincare products. For extra brightness, we sometimes add a rechargeable work light above or to the side.
Start with a phone, clean background and consistent light. Upgrade the camera only when lighting, composition and product presentation are already controlled.
4. Shipping equipment
After four years of cutting and taping paper labels, switching to a JADENS thermal printer changed our daily workflow. We now print, peel and stick 4×6 fanfold labels for Etsy, WooCommerce, eBay and returns.
- Accurate shipping scale
- Thermal printer once volume justifies it
- Mailers or boxes suited to the product
- Protective packing materials
- Organized storage
5. Analytics, SEO and business controls
- Google Search Console
- Website analytics
- Product-level profit tracking
- Sales-tax and business compliance appropriate to your location
- Backups and security
- Clear refund, privacy and shipping policies
