Why you can trust this guide

Our small-business coverage is informed by helping operate Olive Plus Sage, a handmade skincare brand that has sold on Etsy since 2019 and through its own WooCommerce store since 2024. We built and manage the website, ecommerce systems, product listings, shipping workflow and related tools. Product claims and current platform details are checked against official documentation.

Service terms, pricing and platform features can change. Details checked August 2026.

Our answer

Yes—Etsy can still be worth it for a handmade seller, especially when the alternative is launching a new website with no audience. But we would not build an entire business on Etsy alone.

Best use of Etsy

Treat Etsy as a high-visibility sales channel, not the only home of your brand. Build an email list and independent website alongside it.

What Etsy does well

Our experience

Olive Plus Sage has sold on Etsy since 2019. Etsy is faster to maintain than WooCommerce, listings are easier to publish, and the marketplace delivers exposure that a new standalone site does not automatically have. It currently produces more orders for us than the independent website.

  • Built-in shopper trust
  • Simple product-listing workflow
  • Reviews help new buyers feel comfortable
  • Easy way to test demand
  • Less technical maintenance than WordPress

The biggest frustrations

The greatest weakness is lack of control. Etsy may remove a listing without a clear explanation, and losing a listing can also mean losing the value of reviews attached to that product. Reaching live support can be difficult.

Search visibility and fees also change under a platform you do not own. A business that depends entirely on Etsy is exposed to decisions it cannot control.

Are Etsy Ads worth it?

Sometimes, but they require discipline. Keyword selection can be tricky, and advertising too many products at a high daily budget can produce alarming spend. When we increased the budget to roughly $25 per day, costs rose too fast and we scaled it back.

Judge ads by contribution margin—not just Etsy’s attributed revenue. An ad can produce a sale that looks successful while fees, discounts, product cost and shipping erase most of the profit.

The strategy we recommend

  1. Launch with a focused set of strong products.
  2. Use Etsy to gain exposure and reviews.
  3. Control ad budgets tightly.
  4. Reserve and build your own domain early.
  5. Develop an independent store before you urgently need one.
  6. Track profitability by product and channel.

Who Etsy is best for

Good fit: handmade sellers validating products, creators without an existing audience, and businesses that want marketplace exposure.

Not enough by itself: brands that need complete control, complex customization, strong customer ownership or protection from marketplace decisions.
