Our small-business coverage is informed by helping operate Olive Plus Sage, a handmade skincare brand that has sold on Etsy since 2019 and through its own WooCommerce store since 2024. We built and manage the website, ecommerce systems, product listings, shipping workflow and related tools. Product claims and current platform details are checked against official documentation.
The short answer
Etsy is easier to launch, easier to maintain and currently brings Olive Plus Sage more orders. WooCommerce is more work and carries ongoing fixed costs, but it gives us control over the brand, customer experience, design and long-term business asset.
Start with Etsy when you need exposure and a fast way to validate products. Begin building your own WooCommerce store soon afterward so the business is not completely dependent on Etsy’s rules, search system and support limitations.
Etsy and WooCommerce side by side
| Area | Option A | Option B | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup | Create listings and start selling | Build hosting, WordPress, theme, checkout and policies | Etsy is much faster |
| Exposure | Built-in marketplace audience | You must generate traffic | Etsy wins early |
| Brand control | Limited marketplace layout | Full design and merchandising control | WooCommerce wins |
| Maintenance | Relatively light | Themes, plugins, SEO, security and updates | Etsy is easier |
| Costs | Fees rise with sales and ads | Hosting and software continue in slow months | Depends on volume |
| Platform risk | Listings can be removed | You control the store | WooCommerce is safer long term |
Where Etsy wins
Olive Plus Sage has sold on Etsy since 2019. Listing products is fast, the marketplace already has shoppers, and the workflow is much easier to maintain than a full website. Etsy remains the stronger sales channel for us today.
The frustration is control. A listing can be removed without a clear explanation, reviews associated with that listing can effectively be lost, and reaching a live person for support can be difficult. A marketplace can provide traffic, but it is not a business asset you fully control.
Where WooCommerce wins
We launched the Olive Plus Sage WooCommerce store about two years ago and built the entire website ourselves through tutorials, examples, trial and error. It gives us control over branding, product presentation, checkout options, SEO and the customer journey.
The tradeoff is workload. Designing pages, managing plugins, troubleshooting conflicts, improving speed and learning SEO require far more time than posting an Etsy listing.
Cost and workload
Etsy can become expensive when ads and transaction-related fees accumulate, but costs often rise alongside sales. WooCommerce has fixed expenses such as hosting, domains, email, SEO software and paid design or store tools even when sales are slow.
For Olive Plus Sage, the independent website currently produces fewer orders than Etsy while requiring more monthly and annual spending. That does not make it a mistake; it means the website is a long-term brand investment rather than an instant replacement for Etsy.
What should a new handmade seller do?
- Launch on Etsy to validate products and reach shoppers faster.
- Reserve your domain immediately so another party cannot take the brand name.
- Build a simple independent site soon after, even before it matches Etsy sales.
- Use both channels while tracking fees, time and profitability separately.
- Do not rely on one platform for every review, customer relationship and sale.
